Altai
Name Altai is translated with Turkic as "golden". Altai is a big mountains system of Asia. It consist of the Altai, Mongolian Altai and Gobi - Altai. The basic part of Altai is located in territory of Russia where it reaches along border with Mongolia and China 2.000 km. The part of territory of Altai (so-called Ore Altai) is located in territory of Kazakhstan. The highest top is the Belukha (4506 meters) is located in territory of Russia.
Russian Altai is situated in the south-east of the West Siberia. Its area is 167.85 thousand square km (its length from west to east is 600 km, from north to south is 400 km). On the territory of Altai there are 60 administrative districts and 11 towns. Administrative centre is Barnaul. The population of Barnaul is about 640.000 people. Main towns: Barnaul, Byisk, Rubtsovsk, Zarinsk, Novoaltaisk. The population of Altai is 2.700.000 people.
The climate of Altai Region is extreme continental, with short, but hot and dry summers (average July temperature equaling +26? °C +28? °C, maximum +36? °C) and cold winters (average January temperature equaling -15? °C -32? °C, minimum -42? °C). The absolute minimum is fixed in steppe Chujskoj (-60? °C). The atmospheric precipitation is about 800-1200 mm in year.
Ecological cleanness of the region has been preserved due to its remoteness from the large industrial centers. This helps the plants to accumulate a maximum of active substances and prevents from accumulation of the impurities characteristic of the territories with the developed industry and agriculture.
